Business is any lawful activity, conducted primarily for the purchase, sale, lease, and rental of personal or real property; or for the manufacture, processing, and/or marketing of products, commodities, or any other personal property; or for the sale of services to the public as advertising display or displays.

Business refers to at least three closely related commercial topics. The first is a commercial, professional or industrial organization or enterprise, generally referred to as 'a business.' The second is commercial, professional, and industrial activity generally, as in 'business continues to evolve as markets change.' Finally, business can be used to refer to a particular area of economic activity, such as the 'record business' or the 'computer business'.

Economy is:
- the system of production and distribution and consumption
- the efficient use of resources; 'economy of effort'
- frugality in the expenditure of money or resources; 'the Scots are famous for their economy'
- an act of economizing; reduction in cost; 'it was a small economy to walk to work every day'; 'there was a saving of 50 cents'

Originally, it meant the management and regulation of the resources of the household; that is, of the immediate family with its slaves and dependents. Political economy originally meant the management of the household of the State. Its the combined business and work done by a community. When people are buying a lot and businesses are getting richer, the economy is said to be good. At the time of Confederation, the fur trade, farming, logging, mining, shipbuilding and the railway industry all helped contribute to Canada's economy.
