Grass is Greener Under the Picnic Table

Americans love outdoor living so much, that it often seems as if our grills, picnic tables, and patio furniture are our most important possessions. To give ourselves even more time to enjoy them, many of us have abandoned the ideal of the emerald-green, meticulously manicured lawn, and the prize-winning garden, in favor of low-maintenance landscapes.
Still, there are those who actually enjoy doing yard work, and cultivating lawns that are so gorgeous that the only things greener are the neighbors. If that is your goal, there are some easy ways in which you can achieve outstanding results.
If you want your grass to get really green, mow it often. This will force the grass to grow thicker, which will help it to crowd out weeds. Make sure that the blades on the mower are very sharp, so that they can make a clean, even cut, because, when grass is ragged, it is more vulnerable to disease. Remember split ends are as unhealthy for your grass as they are for your hair.
Be careful not to cut the grass too short, or it will require more water and herbicides, and become difficult to manage. Just how low you should go depends upon the type of grass that you have, but, as a general rule, you shouldnt cut off more than one-third of its height at a time. This is what experts refer to as scalping, and the grass will take awhile to recover from it. Mowing it high will cause the grass to grow deeper roots, which will increase its immunity to disease, and decrease its need for water.
Do not mow your lawn when it is wet. Besides preventing the blades from making the sharpest cuts possible, mowing a saturated lawn will compress the soil and, thus, the roots, so that they wont be able to breathe. Then, the grass will die, and your lawn will develop bald spots. Remember bald spots are as undesirable on your lawn as they are on your head.
Another advantage of mowing your lawn more often is that the clippings will be short, so you wont have to worry about bagging them. This will cut down on your work, and benefit the grass, because the clippings will disappear back into the ground and act as fertilizer, instead of lying there, turning brown.
Dont water the lawn too often, as that will prevent the roots from growing deep enough into the soil. Shallow roots can get tangled up among the blades of grass, and form a mat of grass dreadlocks over the soil. Remember dreadlocks are as unhealthy for your lawn as they are for your hair.
