A Brief History of English Landscape Gardens

Of the various types of garden landscaping, perhaps the most enjoyable is that of the English Landscape Garden. Its straightforward beauty and simplicity offer much to the gardening world, and is often the choice of public parks and/or facilities.
The characteristics of an English Landscape Garden include curving and winding lines; loose, informal garden views, highlighted by specific points of interest, such as benches, statuary or replicated ruins; the blending of garden and parkland, so that what appears to be a natural melding exists, rather than defined boundaries; gardens and their lawns begin at the house and flow outward, avoiding the need for small personal gardens around the house~s perimeter; and a great mixture of plant varieties, sizes, shapes and colors in order to create a more natural balanced view.
Though the popularity of these gardens has dwindled somewhat over the years, some gardens in Europe give us a glimpse of what landscaping might have looked like centuries ago, at the height of the trend toward English Landscape Gardening. There are many beautiful examples in such gardens as Stowe, Blenheim Palace, Castle Howard, Stourhead and Rousham House, to give you just a few.
English Landscape Gardening is rooted in European landscape painting. It was designers like William Kent who turned the gardens into art forms in their own right. Humphrey Repton and Capability Brown, already famous as designers in their own right, also played a role, bringing in their own outside influences.
Despite some initial criticism of English Landscape design, the gardens conceptualized by these men soon became prominent. Each of the designers followed a distinct vision, however. Kent took his cue from ancient European culture, while Brown specifically wanted his gardens to resemble the English countryside. Repton, on the other hand, wanted to put flowers right up next to the house, an idea which had not been done until that time.
English Landscape Gardens of today can be rather eclectic in nature, blending influences from Kent, Repton and Brown in their design approach. Other cultures sometimes influence this type of design, as well, which is represented in the Chinese influence on some of the English Landscape designs.
