Human Error
To err is human. We agree to the saying but cannot give this as an excuse when we know what we can do to prevent it from causing a disaster called data loss.
Its not only malfunctioning machine parts, natural disasters, environmental conditions, or power failure but also human beings. You should not be surprised if I say that 32% of all data losses are caused by human error. When you notice that you are unable to access the data, which you could previously or notice an error message displaying File Not Found, then you should know that your data is lost.
Now you would want to know the reasons for the loss that has occurred. Let me list a few of them
Accidental deletion of critical files:
Of the common mistakes humans make, accidental deletions are known to be most prevalent. Data loss caused due to accidental deletion has been proven to be more than 50% of all other human errors.
Accidental destruction of hardware/ Mishandling computer:
Poor handling of disk drives and other digital media accounts for 35% requests for a data recovery company specialists.
Failure to properly backup data:
If you opt for a manual data backup process, the chances are that you may frequently lose data. It may be because the back sessions you performed improperly or forgotten.
Accidental overwriting of files:
When you try to extract files to a folder where the files of same name are already existing, you receive a dialogue box. However, if you check the Overwrite option in the Extract dialog box, you may not even receive a dialog box to confirm the same and your files will be overwritten automatically.
Overwriting files is very different from deleting them.
When you delete a file, you can still retrieve it from the recycle bin, but when you overwrite a file, you cannot get them back. Files that have been overwritten are gone forever.
You would notice the following changes, and later discover that the data is lost.
You try to open a word document or any other application, and here you go! You cannot see what you had written last night. This is nothing but that you have lost your valuable information. Yes, I know that you were able to access that last time you were working on the computer. But, accept that you have lost it.
You click twice on the file name you wish to open, and what you see is File not found. You know that you had saved it properly. Blame it on your computer, since it cannot recognize it or yourself because you instructed it to do so. However, you might not remember that.
You may consider reading this if you don't want your precious data to be gone forever
When you are trying to transfer data, make sure that you save it in the destination you want it to. Be cautious and rethink when you receive message asking you to replace the existing file. Click yes only when you decide that you are replacing the existing file.
If due to certain reasons, you are still unsure that you are performing the right task, then save a copy of the data, so that you restore it in need. Make sure that you don't shut down the computer while its running certain programs. Even avoid moving the system while it is in operation.
You want to upgrade the operating system, but did you back up your most important files and directories? Make sure you do that as installation may pose several different problems. Well, it would be even much better if you don't attempt any installations, repair, or operations in which you don't have previous experience.
